THE MONASHEES are one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the world. Located in the interior of British Columbia, Canada, they are famous for their pristine beauty and powder snow. The Monashees are a destination for the backcountry adventurer.

Interior Alpine Recreation was established in 1979 by Adolph Teufele to facilitate access to the gems of the backcountry. The Monashee area was chosen out of Adolph's love for the backcountry skiing and hiking in the region.

Construction of the Monashee Chalet began in 1980. Under the guidance and vision of Adolph, the Chalet was built with the generous help of family and friends.

The majority of building materials were flown to the chalet site by helicopter or transported by snow-cat in the winter. Today, the chalet provides a comfortable backcountry base of operation. It is a work in progress and we strive to keep improving on a good thing.

The Memorial Hut in the Dominion Mountain basin is at an elevation of 6,500 feet. It is scheduled to open for Winter 2002 - updates will be posted to this site.

In Loving Memory
On September 3, 2000 Adolf Teufele passed away at his home surrounded by the love of his family and friends. His honest nature, warm character and profound presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The Monashee Chalet will continue to be operated by his wife and family as a memorial to him and his love of nature and wilderness. We hope you will take the opportunity to experience and enjoy that which was so close to Adolph.

The Land of Beyond
Have you ever heard of the Land of Beyond
That dreams at the gates of the day
Alluring it lies at the skirts of the skies,
And ever so far away.
Alluring it calls: O ye the yoke galls
And ye of the trail overfond
With saddle and pack, by paddle and track,
Let's go to the Land of Beyond!
Have ever you stood where the silences brood,
And vast the horizons begin,
At the dawn of the day to behold far away,
The goal you would strive for and win!
Yet ah! in the night when you gain to the height,
With the vast pool of heaven star-spawned,
Afar and agleam, like a valley of dream
Still mocks you a Land of Beyond.
Thank God! there is always a Land of Beyond
for us who are true to the trail
A vision to seek, a beckoning peak
A fariness that never will fail;
A pride in our soul that mocks at a goal
A manhood that irks at a bond
