WILDERNESS
TRAVEL OFFERS adventures to satisfy your wild side. Backcountry
trips take place in pristine areas in which -- "Take only
photos, leave only footprints" and "pack it in, pack
it out" -- apply.
Safe backcountry travel demands a greater awareness of the surrounding
environment and weather conditions. Having the right gear, as
well as knowledge and experience in route finding, map and compass
skills will contribute to a safe and enjoyable experience.
The Monashee Chalet and Memorial Hut (under construction) were
built to provide secure and comfortable shelter for relaxing after
an exhilarating day of hiking or skiing. Be prepared to be humbled
and amazed by what nature has to offer.
Backcountry Skiing
There are basically two types of backcountry skiing. Overland
ski touring approximates cross-country skiing while mountain ski
touring is closer to alpine skiing. They are similar enough that
on any given ski tour, you could easily participate in both types.
The focus in Overland touring is on covering terrain, seeing the
sights and simply being away from the more traveled roads. Mountain
ski touring focuses on climbing mountains and downhill skiing.
Your legs, lungs, and stamina replace ski lifts.
There are two downhill skiing styles of mountain touring. Telemark
is a type of turn that requires that the heel of the boot not
be attached to the ski -- free heel skiing. The other style uses
"alpine touring equipment" to execute parallel turns with the
boot heel firmly attached to the ski, like standard alpine bindings.
Backcountry solitude has some inherent risks and we recommend
you research information on avalanches,
altitude, weather and other related topics as well as reviewing
our section on SAFETY
